I have the honour to acknowledge receipt (6) of your despatch No.126 of 4th April, 1935, inquiring as
to the position with regard to the proposed British Empire
and China Trade Fair.

The first suggestion to hold such a fair
was made by the Advertising & Publicity Bureau, Limited, a local British firm with connections in Malaya and elsewhere coincidentally with my despatch No. 322 of 28th May, 1934, () but the proposals did not take tangible form for many months
thereafter. The matter was considered in Executive Council
on 30th August, when the proposal was approved in principle, and it was agreed that, provided that a definite and detailed scheme satisfactory to Government was forthcoming, Government
would allow the promoters free use for one year of a site in' Kowloon, and make a grant not exceeding the $2,000.00 which it was prepared to make in aid of a further Empire Fair.

On 29th January this year, the promoters
laid before me a detailed scheme which, although making no
arrangements for the financial guarantee from the Banks which I had desired, indicated that there was fair prospect of
success for the enterprise, and, with the concurrence of the
Executive Council, I communicated as requested by the promoters,
with the Departments of Commerce for Australia, New Zealand and
